PhD Program Requirements

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is intended for those students planning a career in university teaching, research, or other activities calling for a high degree of scholarly competence.

The Institute's program consists of: a language or logic requirement; an examination in the field, broadly defined, within which the thesis topic lies; a thesis proposal; and the dissertation and its defense. The student may be asked to take additional course(s) to provide necessary background for the research. Ideally, the student should complete in four years (post-MA) or five years (post-Bachelor's), but a particular topic may require a longer period. Extension beyond six years requires special approval from the faculty.

Synopsis

The Institute's program consists of: at least 13 half-courses; a language or logic requirement; a specialist examination in the field, broadly defined, within which the thesis topic lies; a thesis proposal; and the dissertation and its defense. The student may be asked to take additional course(s) to provide necessary background for the research. The PhD candidate will be funded for a maximum of five years, including the MA year if the student takes an MA. Student entering direct from the Bachelor's degree will have five years of funding, while students entering from the Master's degree will be offered four years of funding. Extension beyond six years requires special approval from the faculty.

To enter the PhD program, whether from the MA or the Bachelor's the student must show superior abilities. If the student has taken graduate courses, we normally expect at least an A- average in that work. Although letters of recommendation and official transcripts are not required from students who have completed the IHPST MA program, all applicants must submit a statement outlining their proposed thesis research.
